Despite the fact that the Azera sold quite well considering its very competitive class, Hyundai was thinking to discontinue the model from the US market because they thought that it would be just too close of their Genesis. However, now that the Genesis received its brand, the Azera now has room and a chance considering it will be priced lower and quite a bit more aggressively than before. While Hyundai did not say a word about the upcoming model just yet, the 2017 Hyundai Azera has been spied in a parking lot in South Korea and from the looks of it, the car will be a lot more impressive than the ongoing model.
The front wheel drive chassis and platform will be quite similar to that of the previous model but considering most other full-size sedans are using the same recipe, this should really not be a problem for them. The price will likely be around 10% lower than before, so expect the new Azera to start at roughly $32,000 or less which would be quite a bit better than before. The release date of the finished product will likely be in the early 2017 or even before the end of this year while the car should be available on the market a couple of months after that.
2017 Hyundai Azera Release Date
In terms of design, the current model’s coupe-like appearance with its rather low and arched roof is going to be kept unchanged. However, most other features of the car will be changed in order to make the Azera part of their current design scheme and also to give people a nicer looking car than before. The front end will get new headlights as well as a new grille which will be similar to those found on Hyundai’s latest models. The front and rear bumpers will be updated as well while the tail lights will be all new. This means that while the car will be pretty much all new, it will still give people an already well-known figure to compare it with. Even the photos are of one heavily camouflaged vehicle it is clear where the changes will come.
Inside the cabin, the 2017 Hyundai Azera will stop offering the rather unappealing-looking dashboard and interior design which was mostly inherited from the lower-end models of the Hyundai brand. Instead, the car will now feature a more conventional look with a cleaner dashboard, better materials such as soft-touch plastics and upholstery on the door covers and dash. Also, this time around the mid-spec models will come as standard with leather seats as well as wood or aluminum inserts which would allow the Azera to become a very impressive offering for its class.
It is clear that Hyundai want’s to improve overall impression of this vehicle but still they need to keep it less expensive and under Genesis offer. Center console brings new display with an 8.4-inch diagonal screen with the main purpose to provide infotainment to passengers plus navigation and information about various in-car systems. Under display, we have climate and audio controls while right beside it start/stop button clearly shows that this car maker want’s to produce a car with a good level of comfort and luxury. At this point it is not clear if the instrument cluster will come with one large and customizable display or we will be getting two analog gauges plus small display in between of these two. It is possible that we will see both versions, depending on the trim level that you choose with higher Limited trim getting the most attractive option.
Engine wise, the 2017 Hyundai Azera, is likely going to be offered with two different units in the lineup, this will allow for the lower price tag of the US-based model that was only available with a V6. The base offering is now expected to receive a rather new 1.6 liter turbocharged inline four which has been available on the European i30 for some time now. This will likely be updated to provide around 220 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque which should be more than enough for an entry level full-size sedan.
Also, the well-known 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 should be upgraded with an updated direct injection system which will allow it to provide over 300 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. While fuel economy results for the rumored 1.6 unit is not known we expect to see a slight improvement on a 3.3-liter unit that could bring 21/29 mpg. Both options will likely get an updated six-speed automatic and front wheel drive as standard while this time around, an all-wheel drive system might be offered in certain parts of the World in order to handle the harsher conditions.
A hybrid is our wish, but it is highly unlikely for the Azera considering that the small 1.6-liter engine will definitely provide good enough fuel consumption with ease. In case that 2017 Hyundai Azera hybrid comes, we could see the system from Sonata that uses 2.0 liter I4 engine in combination with an electric motor and lithium polymer battery pack. This is a setup that pumps out shy of 200 hp making it a decent competitor to 1.6-liter turbo while it could return slightly worse results than 40/44 mpg of Sonata.
Have in mind that we have only a few spy photos that are not of the highest quality. Also, in the gallery, we have photos of currently available generation model that was delivered all the way back in 2012. We are sure that the new model will not be significantly different, at least when it comes to overall looks.
